IN BRIEF: The top seeded University of Cincinnati Clermont defeated the eighth seeded Bluefield State College 9-1.
HOW THEY SCORED: UC Clermont opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with three runs on three hits. After a Jonathan Deifel lead off double, Kori Embs singled and Nick King walked to load the bases. Bluefield got their second out of the inning on a Chase Louk pop-up to second, but Isaac Stidham came through big for the Cougars, doubling to clear the bases.
UC Clermont added a run in the bottom of the second inning as Embs added his second single of the day to drive in Nathan Gambill who reached on an error. The Big Blues of Bluefield State answered in the top of the third with a Justin Bowler lead-off double. After two consecutive outs, Peyton Durham singled to drive in Bowler, taking the score to 4-1.
UC Clermont added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on the backs of Jake Murray (single), Nick King (RBI double), and a sac fly from Louk to score King. They padded their lead in the sixth, scoring three runs on singles and strong baserunning from Gambill, Murray, and King.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Nick King of UC Clermont was 3-3 at the plate with three RBIs and two steals on night. Issac Stidham was 1-3 at the plate but his double cleared the bases for three runs. Jake Allen went six innings allowing five hits and just one earned run on his 27 batters faced. Clermont was 5-11 (.455) with two outs away in the inning and started the inning with a hit in four of their six innings at bat.
Bluefield State College's Peyton Durham was 1-2 at the plate with an RBI. Pitcher Tanner Muovich went five innings allowing five earned runs and eight hits. The Big Blues left eight men on base in the game
NEXT UP: UC Clermont moves on to the quarter-finals of the USCAA Small College World Series and will play the 2015 national champion, the Apprentice School at 11:00 A.M. EST. Bluefield State moves to the elimination bracket and play the winner of the Central Penn and Cleary match up at 6:30 P.M., Tuesday May 16th.
