IN BRIEF: A seven run third inning helped elevate Penn State DuBois above third ranked Wright State Lake. The Lions defeated the Lakers 17-5.
HOW THEY SCORED: Garrett Brown of Penn State DuBois led off the game with a single and made it to second on a stolen base. Brown would score without another hit in the inning, coming all the way from second to home on a wild pitch that escaped toward the home team's dugout.
Wright State Lake answered quickly in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Tyler Venters opened the inning with a single. Dustin Lewis reached on an error, before a Connor Burr single loaded the bases with no outs. Tristan Becker grounded out to shortstop to drive in the first run of the inning. Quintin Cantelli drove in the other two runs with a two-RBI single.
Penn State DuBois decreased the lead to 3-2 in the second inning off of three singles by Jakob Felix, Dan Bowman, and Colton Treaster. After a scoreless bottom of the second by Wright State, DuBois would break the game open in the third, scoring seven runs on four hits and five errors. Lance Pennington led off the third with a double and Talon Falls reached base on error. USCAA All American Brandon Gettig drove in both runners on a two-RBI double. Clayton Butler reached base on error, before Felix doubled to score two more for the Lions. Bowman reached on error in the next at bat, before Caleb Bennett grounded out for a fielder's choice RBI. Brown would get his first RBI on a fielder's choice error and Pennington would add a single RBI to stretch the lead to 9-3.
DuBois added another run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Felix doubled down the line to left field. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Felix scored off a softly hit single to left by Bennett for his second RBI of the game.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Penn State DuBois put the nail in the coffin, scoring three runs behind a Falls' single, a Gettig walk, and a Butler two-RBI single. Butler would later score on an errant pickoff move.
Down 13-3, Wright State Lake avoided the ten run rule in the bottom half of the fifth. Ronaldo Acosta led off with a single and advanced to second on an errant throw. Becker scored him in the next at bat of the inning on a single to center. With two outs, Dakota Shatto-Craft walked, advancing Becker to second. Becker would score the Lakers second run of the inning on an Isaac Fitzgerald double.
DuBois again extended the lead to 10 in the top of the sixth inning. Walsh led off with a walk, before advancing to second on a groundout by Treaster. Walsh later scored following two wild pitches. Leadoff hitter Brown then singled, stole second, advanced to third following a Pennington single, and scored by stealing home on a dropped third strike play to first. Pennington added an insurance run on a throw down to second following a Gettig walk.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Lance Pennington was 3-5 at the plate with a RBI. Jacob Felix was 3-4 with two RBIs. Clayton Butler was 2-5 during the game and brought home 3 RBIs on the night, a game-high. Gettig, Fleix, and Bennet each had two RBIs for DuBois. Dimink Kriner went five innings on the mound allowing eight hits, four earned runs, five walks, and four strikeouts. Logan Johnson came in for the save in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game on the 10-run rule.
Wright State had an off night on defense with eight errors. At the plate, each of the Lakers eight hits came from different players. Becker and Cantelli led the team with two RBI each while Fitzgerald had the fifth RBI for the Lakers.
NEXT UP: Penn State DuBois moves to the quarter-finals of the winner's bracket to play defending National Champion College of St. Joseph's Vermont at 4:00pm on Tuesday. Wright State Lake will face off against Penn State University Athletic Conference Champions Penn State Mont Alto at 1:30pm on Tuesday.
